MICHAEL GAILLARD
Michael Gaillard lives and works in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Educated at Stanford (BA, Visual Art) and Columbia (MFA, Visual Art), he has become known for his landscape photography that explores a broad spectrum of topics about the human condition. Gaillard’s work interrogates details within the lived environment that speak to larger themes about our place in the world and the narratives we construct around it through the images we produce and the marks that we leave behind.
His photography is precise, isolating symbols rich with contradictions and bending the space between the real and the represented, the screen and the projection. With his eye for formalism, Gaillard dissects the relationship between surface and depth within two-dimensionality that reflects on the nature of image and sight as only photography can.

Gaillard captures his landscape photography on location through a meditative process of deep focus that reveals easily-overlooked subtleties and symbols in the landscape. He hones his craft through compositional and technical experimentation that pushes the boundaries between technique and tools, artist and artwork.
Throughout his time roaming the landscape, Gaillard remains instinctively aware of his surroundings and what they might reveal. Threads of inquiry, interwoven throughout his practice, are gradually populated by new observations that enrich and deepen these subjects, filling each vessel over time.
